Have you considered exploring the illustrious city of Medellin?

Well, you might want to consider visiting this beautiful city.

It’s been a long time since you’ve had a holiday, and you’re looking forward to getting some well-deserved downtime. Having some proper sleep, catching up with your books, and unwinding all the pressures from being cooped up at home.

But before you check out the cheapest flights to Medellin; you need to arrange an itinerary first. And my oh my, sticking to your travel schedule can be a pain when things don’t go as expected.

You have worked very hard to find the best deals available in your past travels. Looking at brochures, blogs, reviews from friends, and all that jazz. Once you’ve arrived, however, you may have noticed that there were some things that the travel blogs neglected to mention.

Don’t worry, Medellin is nothing like that. When you actually get to see Medellin’s wondrous beauty in person, the reports you read on that shady-looking travel booking platform tell the truth — because it really exceeds your standards.

There are still minor inconveniences that we cannot avoid. To save you all the hassle and trouble, here are some recommendations for a less stressful travel in Medellin.

Tip #1: Choose to ride their public transit over taxis

Taking a cab while traveling to other countries seems to be a more efficient means of transportation. However, you must also consider traffic, fare, and the risk that the driver may be overcharging you.

If you’re travelling Medellin, though, none of these things are a concern. They have outstanding public transportation, rivaling that of Bogota and Cartagena.

When commuting on a tight budget, using the metro instead of their taxis will save you a lot of money. Not to mention that their metro system easily runs by the city’s most famous tourist destinations, allowing you to visit all of them for less than a dollar in fare.

Isn’t this a great deal?

Tip #2: Experience the Real City Walking Tours

The Real City Walking Tours is a travel experience in which locals assemble a group of visitors and take them around the El Centro neighborhood. This tour also includes famous tourist destinations such as Botero Park, Parque de las Luces, and the Antioquia Museum.

While the tour is free, it would be better to tip the tour guides. We strongly advise you to do so. The staff is friendly and open-minded, so they may answer any questions you may have. And yes, they are asked about Pablo Escobar as well.

In this city full of fascinating stories, there’s a lot to unpack. Medellin’s magical transformation from the world’s most deadly city to the “City of the Eternal Spring” is one of those tales not to be missed.

Tip #3: Book a hostel with free breakfast

There are a few hostels in Medellin that charge about $10 per night, and some of them even provide (very heavy) breakfast meals. They’re well-kept and cost a reasonable amount of money. Despite the lack of aesthetic appeal, the area is well-maintained, allowing visitors to relax without worrying about hygiene issues.

However, if you intend to save a lot of money by couchsurfing, there are a few $3-$5 breakfast and lunch sets available. They normally serve big servings and are fairly priced, so you can go about your day without worrying about going hungry.

Medellin’s meals are normally hearty, which is ideal for budget-conscious passengers.

Tip #4: Try the Bandeja Paisa

If there is one thing you must try while visiting Colombia, it is the Bandeja Paisa. This dish is often found on the menus of small restaurants, as it is the paisas’ favorite (a term used by locals to refer to themselves).

To make this popular Colombian dish, rice, avocado, beans, corn cake, banana, four types of pork, and a fried egg are all put together on one plate.

Tourists with a small appetite are welcome to share this with another tourist. That’s awesome because you won’t waste much food and you’ll save money if you break the bill. They can serve portions that are a little too large for a single person to consume.

Tip #5 Visit the local markets

Various gastronomic markets can be found in Medellin. There are many arcades to visit, ranging from the glamorous and lush markets of Mercado del Rio to the flea market of El Pulguero Llanogrande.

Plaza Minorista is one of Medellin’s many markets, and it’s one you can visit at least once. This is a farmer’s market where you can get the freshest fruits and street food. It’s the kind of place where you go if you want to check out new cuisines and exotic fruits.

Some of Medellin’s high-end restaurants get their ingredients here. You’ll be compelled to take another bite after sampling a couple of their exotic tropical fruits. When you get back home, you’ll definitely miss the delicious taste.

Tip #6 Hang with the Locals

Being a solo traveler can be boring. Though you may have seen breathtaking sights, you do not have someone to share them with.

If you’re looking for people to hang out with, consider hanging out with the locals. Contrary to popular belief, the locals are pretty friendly. The locals are really nice, so don’t be surprised if you end up talking with one of them for a while.

If you’re looking for a crowd to mingle with, you can visit Communa 13.

Communa 13 used to be an unsafe place, but over the past few years, it has reclaimed itself and has become a hotspot for locals and tourists to kill some time. The graffiti now rings every corner as a symbol of their drastic change.

Navigating through Medellin

It is apparent from the results that Medellin has been improving steadily for the past few years despite the numerous rumors circulating about its history. It is really a good place to take a vacation in compared to other major cities in Colombia.

Tourists have observed a steady increase in their country, making the locals hopeful that this trend continues.

Medellin is by far the most fascinating city in South America, so don’t miss out on making the most of your time there and write about travel experience.
