A Digital Nomad’s Guide to Medellin, Colombia

A man smiling while using a laptop

Medellin, Colombia– formerly known as the most dangerous city in the world and the home of world-famous drug lord Pablo Escobar, has now redeemed itself as the City of Eternal Spring. Indeed, Medellin, Colombia has one of the most amazing metropolitan transformations in recent history.

The city is currently known as South America’s hotspot for digital nomads who wish to take a break from the bustling city life and enjoy a carefree working routine in the comfort of rich history, amazing culture, friendly locals, and great food.

There’s no doubt that remote workers around the world make a beeline to secure a spot in this metropolis, mostly because of its amazing weather. With its perfect mix of humidity and sunshine, you will feel cozy and warm.

Other than that, a trip to Medellin is not complete without trying all the fun activities it has to offer. Here’s a guide to Medellin you can follow after finishing a business call or two:

1. Ride their cable cars and explore the whole city.

One of Medellin's biggest revamp is its transport system. Medellin has reconstructed its means of transportation with the now-famous metro cable cars. You may ride them as many times as you like for the price of a single ticket, as long as you don't leave the metro.

Take in the view of a seemingly friendly neighborhood, artistic graffiti on the street, and the picturesque scenery of nature when taking this ride.

2. Visit the España Library.

You might also want to consider some time of your work to visit one of Medellin’s architectural wonders. This structure looks a lot like three big boulders on top of the mountain that are strategically placed at the end of a metro cable car route!

This library now serves as a civic symbol of hope among the locals as they work their way to reconstructing their city from being the world’s most known drug cartel.

3. Pay homage to Fernando Botero.

Forget about Pablo Escobar for a moment and learn more about Colombia’s most renowned artist. He is actually referred to by the people as Colombia’s unofficial artist. In his honor, they have built the Plaza Botero, a public exhibit that hosts 23 of Fernando Botero’s bronze sculptures.

His unique obtuse style that is depicted in most of his sculptures has gained the attention of many impressive international art galleries. In the plaza’s adjacent museum, there is also a display of Botero’s paintings depicting a darker time when Medellín was under cartel rule.

4. Learn how to salsa.

Colombians like dancing, and a night out dancing salsa is an excellent opportunity to meet new people and establish new connections in this traveler's hubspot. Put on your dancing shoes and sway your hips as you revel in the craziness and beauty of Colombia’s nightlife.

5. Join romantic singles tours!

Just because you are in the city for leisure and business, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have time for love. Medellin, Colombia is a hub for all types of adventures; and that includes having the opportunity of finding the love of your life.

6. Don’t forget to log off.

It can be easy to get lost in work. High-speed internet, relaxed atmosphere, enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee, all this while you’re sitting in a city cafe. While it is your intention to work and have fun at the same time in an entirely different place, you should also learn how to set boundaries.

The whole purpose of working abroad is to get a taste of a different working experience all while living your life at the moment. A digital nomad’s energy needs rest to thrive too.

Life as a digital nomad can be exciting and fulfilling, most especially when you get to experience it in the city of Medellin, Colombia. Why not book a ticket and visit the country?
